Up Anzoátegui!

The Caribes of Anzoátegui began the Caribbean Series as they ended the final series in Venezuela, with a convincing victory. Manager of the Year Omar Lopez’s team beat host Puerto Rico, represented by Roberto Clemente’s old team the Cangrejeros (Crabbers) of Santurce.

Daryl Thompson, with an 0-3 all-time Major League record, shut down the Crabbers over six solid innings, while San Diego Padre outfielder Alexi Amarista knocked in two with a 2-for-3 night; Niuman Romero also had two ribbies. Native son Jose Gil, the Barcelona, Anzoátegui-born catcher, who’s spent a life time (since 2005, anyhow) in the Yankees minor-league system, also had two hits for the winners, who take on Dominican champions Gigantes del Cibao tonight.
